Romeo Hunte Offers Sleek, Rustic Streetwear at Fall/Winter 2018 Runway Show

Romeo Hunte first generated buzz in 2014, when stars like Zendaya, Beyoncé, and Victor Cruz were spotted wearing his signature buffalo check designs.  Four years later, his women’s lifestyle brand is still delivering the goods but with even more edge and attention to detail.  The designer’s Winter 2018 runway show offered a futuristic glimpse of winter fashion that’s equal parts sleek and rustic.

Hosted at New York’s The Standard Hotel before a crowd of 300 revelers, which included celebrity stylist June Ambrose and actor Broderick Hunter, Hunte’s collection dazzled.  Traditional trench coats were adorned with fur accents, buffalo check woven shirts were paired with skinny leather pants, and there was a bold use of neon yellow and green.  The aesthetic could only be described as “Aspen meets Street Lux”.

One standout look featured red ski goggles, high-waisted leather pants, and a cropped windbreaker—an ensemble that brings couture to the ski lodge.

The finale look was the ultimate statement of the collection: a luxurious, full-length fox fur coat paired back to an orange buffalo check shirt, leather pants, and work boots.

Shearling, patchwork, and PVC were also sprinkled throughout various looks.

Keeping with the overarching theme of Hunte’s work, the futuristic streetwear collection turned wardrobe staples upside down while also offering a message of female empowerment.  However, a handful of the looks were modeled by men, to showcase the gender neutrality and versatility of the statement fur and buffalo check pieces.

Additionally, each of the 29 models were African-American or of African descent—a powerful statement for the fashion industry given the current conversation about diversity.

Expect to hear more about Hunte’s collection in the near future. BET was on hand to film the show and the behind-the-scenes action.  Fashion reporters from Vogue, Elle, WWD, and Forbes were in attendance as well.
